Lawrence Rhu is a poet and professor emeritus at University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia. Nathaniel Wallace serves as Professor of English at South Carolina State University (SCSU), in Orangeburg. As always, surprises are likely, because each Tuesday Duet remains a mystery until the Featured Artists begin. Join us.

Nathaniel Wallace has taught at South Carolina State University since 1991.  He has published numerous refereed and non-referred articles, as well as book and exhibition reviews.  A founding member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, he was also a co-editor of the group’s newsletter, Groutline.  His teaching and research interests include Word and Image studies, Classical literature, East-West comparisons, and American Literature.  Wallace has published a book-length study, Scanning the Hypnoglyph (Brill, 2016), that deals with representations of sleep and dreams during modernism and later.  He is currently completing a monograph on depictions of the experience of awakening in literature and visual art.

Prior to arrival at SCSU, Wallace taught for several years in mainland China and in Europe.  Later on, he was a visiting lecturer in at the University of Konstanz in Germany and then a Fulbright lecturer in American Literature at the University of Bergen in Norway (2011-‘12) as well as at Alexendru Ioan Cuza Univeristy in Romania (2021-‘22).  He has also held fellowships from the NEH and from the Camargo Foundation in France.

A photographer and writer of poetry, Wallace maintains three websites: Barns of South Carolina, Bergen South and North, and The Toppled Shack.  He is currently working on a chapbook, The Homeric Worryer, which deals with the aspirations and agonies of an ordinary sailor and warrior under the command of an aristocrat and arch-schemer, Odysseus.

Laurence Rhu: For nearly half a century, Lawrence Rhu taught English at all levels ranging from sixth grade to graduate students—stateside in Boston, New Orleans, and Columbia, SC, and abroad in Rome and Lisbon. He is the Todd Professor of the Italian Renaissance, emeritus, at the University of South Carolina, and he co-hosts “Simple Gifts,” a monthly music and poetry event, at the Columbia Friends Meeting. He has written books about the Italian poet Torquato Tasso and the American philosopher Stanley Cavell, edited Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, and published numerous articles and reviews about the European and American Renaissances.

His poems have appeared in Poetry, North Dakota Quarterly, Innisfree Poetry Journal, The Poetry Society of South Carolina Yearbook, Pinesong, Fall Lines, Conversations: The Journal of Cavellian Studies, Jogos Florais, Forma de Vida, and others. He has recently won awards from the Poetry Society of South Carolina and the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society of New Orleans. His poetry collection Pre-owned Odyssey and Rented Rooms was runner-up for the latter society’s Marble Faun Award during each of its last two years, 2019 and 2020.
